Dogggdays is a fun page for folk who love dogs, and can be added to as a new and or interesting story arrives. Such as, who was the first mammal in space. Everyone knows about the American monkeys, but let's not forget that it was Laika, a Russian dog, that sailed into space on 3 November 1957, soon after Sputnik, becoming the first mammal in space. Should we have a dogs space day each November 3rd to remember Laika? Like many explorers on Earth, and as nearly happened to the Apollo 13 Astronauts, Laika perished in space, where her spirit is now among the stars.

A request of Mr Google reveals no event each November 3rd to remember Laika, the first mammal in space, and a stellar dog at the dawn of the Space Age. When we of Space Pioneers are in our booth in the Exhibitions Hall, at the International Astronautical Congress in Washington, D.C., 21-25 October 2019, should we remember Laika, and promote November 3rd as a Dogs in Space Day, that anyone interested can remember to remember every year? Would that work for you?

Laika
Wikipedia

(Russian: Лайка; c. 1954 – 3 November 1957) was a Soviet space dog who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth. Laika, a stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on 3 November 1957.

Little was known about the impact of spaceflight on living creatures at the time of Laika's mission, and the technology to de-orbit had not yet been developed, so Laika's survival was never expected. Some scientists believed humans would be unable to survive the launch or the conditions of outer space, so engineers viewed flights by animals as a necessary precursor to human missions. The experiment aimed to prove that a living passenger could survive being launched into orbit and endure a micro-g environment, paving the way for human spaceflight and providing scientists with some of the first data on how living organisms react to spaceflight environments.

Laika died within hours from overheating, possibly caused by a failure of the central R-7 sustainer to separate from the payload. The true cause and time of her death were not made public until 2002; instead, it was widely reported that she died when her oxygen ran out on day six or, as the Soviet government initially claimed, she was euthanised prior to oxygen depletion.

On 11 April 2008, Russian officials unveiled a monument to Laika. A small monument in her honour was built near the military research facility in Moscow that prepared Laika's flight to space. It portrayed a dog standing on top of a rocket. She also appears on the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in Moscow.

Honouring the memory of Laika

Laika became a star of the Space Age when she rocketed into space on November 3rd 1957 in Sputnik 2, to be the first living creature from Earth to go into orbital.

Should we remember Laika each year on November 3rd?

What would be the right name for this day?

One suggestion is ~ Laika's Day

We can remember Laika as the first mammal from Earth to orbit our planet: other mammals would follow later.

Though Laika perished on this mission, the tragedy should never diminish the honour deserving ~

Laika has a place in history.

Someone said to me, via their avatar in Second Life ..... "The dog is a hero." ..... and I think that is a good way to sum the matter up.
