ISDC in LA in May

I will seek to keep a forum record of this great adventure to the heart of so much space development and my participation in the International Space Development Conference in Los Angels happening 14-18 May.

Learn more about the 2014 ISDC here ~

I had booked to return to Australia a couple of days after the ISDC and as if Serendipity had other plans for me, An event turned up in Los Angeles with the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference and Expo happening the following two days.

Read all about it here ~

This will be a thrilling event to be at, among pioneers of gaming and the virtual world, including the creator of Second Life, Philip Rosedale.

I have been given a minute to make a pitch at the event and I will be pitching for support for our virtual space program, which includes the need to care for our old Earth as well.

I have responded to the call with a new article ~ Will Gaming Save the Earth ~

What an adventure this will be.

My article ~ Will Gaming Save the Earth? ~ is now published in the Tasmanian times ~

where folk can offer comments.

This article covers the bases on how a virtual space program could drive real space development and also help us to heal the Earth from the ravages of human endeavour.

I have arrived in LA safely, after a long night's flight on Qantas.

Critically, I can access Second Life OK at the hotel where the ISDC is happening and the Kepler presentation will be on Thursday at 3pm.

Couldn't read on the flight, so ended up watching 3 movies.

Settling in to the ISDC venue ~ the Sheriton Gateway ~ right next to the LA airport.

Historic photos of planes are featured around the hotel and in all the rooms.

Being next to the sea, I get a whiff of Pacific salt air on the street.

Heading out on a tour of Hollywood today and if I survive aliens and zombies, will return for the opening of the conference tonight.

USA-Universal Studios-15May2014.jpg

The tour company man said, "We don't need your pin number. We just take your money." So a roller-coaster ride day began.

On to Holleywood and the Universal Studios was very BIG. Saw a special effects show. Went on the studios bus tour. Had to wear 3D glasses when we went into a total surround environment designed by Perter Jackson, with King Kong and dinosaurs. The whole platform was moving around as dinosaurs and King Kong jumped over the top of the tour train. All quite amazing, made more realistic by getting hit by water spray.

The Earthquake was pretty neat, with a train crashing into a subway and a flood of water coming in.

The fire on the jetty at the Jaws set was hot, as you could feel the flames.

Waiting for the escape bus,  wondered if this place could be a good location for a space information centre.

Back in the lobby I had the privilege to meet a living legend. Buzz Aldrin is quite a friendly chap and shoock my hand. He showed me a photo of him scuba diving. I asked if he went scuba diving with von Brawn. Buzz said, "Yes. Off of Hawaii."

I asked Buzz if I could share a thought with him. He said "Yes." I wrote First Step on the back of one of my cards and explained that it was about a concept to remember the Moon landing.

At the opening of ISDC astronaut Gary Barnhard showed a film that he had made at the International Space Station ~ a hammed up SF spoof. Gary made a very impassioned address about getting many people involved in space.

USA-BlackHoleS-17May2014.jpg

Attended a talk on using black holes as a power source for a spaceship drive.

Could that work, or would failure mean getting sucked in  to a black hole and therefore, passengers may not be too keen to ride in a black hole starship.

I suppose just about anything is possible.

USA=ManishaSL-18May2014.jpg

An Indian student at the ISDC, Manisha, made a pastel drawing of the Solar System, which I then put up in our gallery at Nautilus in Second Life.

In the lower left corner is the Indian flag.

It was great to hear Jacki Morie speak about her work for NASA, developing a virtual world for use in long-duration spaceflight, as a way to help keep the astronauts sane and also keep them in touch with their family at home.

Its a brave new world out there.

Pioneer space advocate Rick Tomlinson gave a stirring final address of the conference, focusing on 'Why' space matters.

Rick touched on many reasons, but didn't list survival and I didn't get a chance to ask him "Why?"

Buzz Aldrin also had a few final words to share.

Early night tonight, as I fly to San Francisco at 6.00am to attend the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference and Expo being held at the Computer Museum at Mountain View.

The large sign near the hotel, on the way into the airport, LAX, stands for Los Angeles International Airport.
