Re: How Space Exploration Can Teach Us to Preserve All Life on Earth
Meghan Bartels, 13 September 2018, Space.com

This is an excellent article, and much needed. ~ I hope the awareness will dawn.

Charles S. Cockell has sought to raise this theme, found in his 2007 book ~ Space on Earth.

It deeply saddens me that the global conversation movement is literally blind to the need for space action, to win back a safe Earth.

You raise problems that I have long considered, from Environmental Studies days in 1975, and then engaging in space settlement concepts from 1976.

When I became aware in the late 1980s that there were serious survival issues that needed to be addressed, I re-engaged with environmentalism.

When the Berlin Wall fell, and global peace seemed tangible, the focus shifted from nuclear doom, to environmental concerns.

The key directive that came through :~ Having an ecologically sustainable lifestyle in a globally equitable society.

Some would say :~ The rich must live more simply, so the poor may simply live.

Dealing with the issue at purly a survival level, as awareness rose that an asteroid had sent the dinosaurs into oblivion, I saw the need to adress that.

An extinction level asteroid could not be dealt with on Earth alone.

I raised the need for a sustainable industrial presence in space, as the key to human survival, in my 2006 document ~ Creating a Solar Civilization ~

Since then I have been working on the details of how we can rise to the challenge, which is included in my latest document ~ The Message ~ followed by a photo survey of our space work in the virtual worlds ~

The unfortunate evidence is gathering, that we need to act quite soon, or events could overwhelm us on Earth, and deliver our own extinction.

From 2006 I suggested that we need to take a peaceful approach in space, or our celestial efforts may prove futile.

War in space could set off a space junk cascade, which could block access to space for hundreds of years, and may have the potential to take out too many airplanes, making air flight too risky. ~ What kind of future would that be? ~ Then, if the level of CO2 in the air is such that it can now send the Earth system into a sudden heat pulse, first warned of by James Lovelock in 2009, other warnings of our early end may be, sadly, realised.

When I look at the problem of kinetic weapons being delivered from space, I see a need for peace and transparency, to assure our survival in space. ~ Implications of Kinetic-Kill Missiles ~

When attending the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, in September 2017, I was delighted to see high profile being given to 2030 being a year of peace in space ~ (Zero Gravity) 0G Summit Advocates the First Peace Summit in Space by 2030 in Support of UNSDGs ~

“Gob-smacked” would be another word, because I had concluded we needed to build an orbital city in space by 2029, and had been promoting peace in space since 2006.

In my last paper ~ Space Pioneers Foundation ~ I explore the framework for immediate action ~

I seek a dozen determined individuals, to help open the way for ten million and more space pioneers to rise to the challenge of securing our cosmic survival.

This is possible now, because the basic tools are at our fingertips to act globally, such as Emails and virtual worlds like Second Life.

When we attend the 2018 International Astronautical Congress in Bremen, Germany, 1-5 October, we will be hunting for determined individuals to the lead the way ~

To what???

ONE   A sustainable industrial presence beyond Earth, an essential investment in out cosmic survival, beyond which there will be no further real cost to space development. The swiftest way to get there may be with a mini-robot space program, using remote control systems, from Earth and in space.

TWO   An orbital city in space by 2029, and with ONE in place, be in position to build living space in space for ten million and more space pioneers, and ultimately, emergency accommodation in space for all Earth’s citizens, along with arks for life (even as seed banks).

THREE   Begin the work of shifting to a sustainable human presence on Earth, which I have read may need to include 40% of the Earth’s land area being natural. By moving much human activity into space, including heavy industry, this will be possible and practicable.

FOUR   Build a fair economy in space and on Earth, which allows all citizens to have work, income, and a home. This will be possible with access to the wealth of space. Building a fair economy will also help to build peace, on Earth and in space.

FIVE   Use the power of the Sun harvested in space and beamed to Earth, to extract excess carbon from the air, and process extracted carbon into a useful resource for Earth and space industries. We also get back a heap of oxygen from cracking CO2. At the same time, we can use space industry to build an adjustable sunshade in space, to help cool the Earth.

SIX   Use industry in space to build robots to clean up the plastics in Earth oceans, which are now killing fish and birds, even down to the micro-plastics that are now entering the food chain. Robots made in space factories could be used for many environmental needs on Earth.

SEVEN   Work on the turning Venus into a second Earth. If we can do that, we can also win back a safe Earth, no matter how much harm is done. And much harm will be done in the coming few years on our highway of tears.

We may grow an ecosystem in space quite simply, beginning with a square metre of living earth, and expand this in space. Then build the system from simple to complex.

Noting the micro-plastics problem, will we need natural fibre in space for cloth? If yes, will there be a need for fleece animals, such as alpacas, and angora rabbits.

If we can survive in space, as seen on the International Space Station, so can rabbits, who would also help to grow earth from their poo.

The next article I am working on, concerns how we can have a fair society with an inclusive economy. This will be essential for peace on Earth and in space, and will also be critical to the next phase in human evolution. It is the design of our society, and our momentum in space, that will help ensure that AI serves our needs, and is not bred as a destroyer of life, as I see happening now, and can see getting worse. Example ~

This man was fired by a computer – real AI could have saved him
Adrian Hopgood, 3 July 2018, The Conversation

This problem is simply one of laziness, when AI is used to increase profit, but basic human rights are suspended. Here is another example from Australia ~

Dawn of the Centrelink Robot ...
Kim Peart, 24 January 2017, Tasmanian Times

The further we allow ourselves to be alienated from fearless compassion (parable of the Good Samaritan), the darker our society becomes, and the less scope we will find to act for fairness. Two examples can be provided ~ one personal from an election campaign, the other from an academic.

Do we need a revolution?

I suggest we need a workolution.

The work we can do now to invest in cosmic survival, will be the revolution, even to the next phase in human evolution among the stars.

If we will not run with evolution to cosmic survival, then we risk extinction.

Each day is critical now, as if we do not have action rolling within the year, the Mother Nature’s war against us may simply overwhelm us.

David Wallace-Wells put the problem in quite clear words in his long article ~ An Uninhabitable Earth ~

"And however sanguine you might be about the proposition that we have already ravaged the natural world, which we surely have, it is another thing entirely to consider the possibility that we have only provoked it, engineering first in ignorance and then in denial a climate system that will now go to war with us for many centuries, perhaps until it destroys us. That is what Wallace Smith Broecker, the avuncular oceanographer who coined the term “global warming,” means when he calls the planet an “angry beast.” You could also go with “war machine.” Each day we arm it more.”

We have booked a booth in the Exhibition Hall at the International Astronautical Congress in Washington, D.C. 21-25 October 2019, number 377, 10 by 10 feet ~

We will seek to make presentations at this space congress.

Will we see you there?

It is our hope to make mission launch in Washington, D.C. in October 2019.

We will be in Bremen for the IAC 2018 from Friday evening 28 September to Sunday 7 October, then going on to Denmark and Norway for a Viking tour.

Maybe we need the fealessness of the Viking spirit of adventure to get us out of our present pickle.

I hope these matters of Earth and space will be of interest to you.

Yours sincerely,

COSMIC SURVIVAL IS NOT HANDED OUT TO THOSE WAITING AROUND FOR A FREE RIDE.
IN THE EVOLUTION OF LIFE, SURVIVAL IS WON BY THOSE WHO WILL RUN AND FIGHT TO SURVIVE.
HUMANS HAVE DRIFTED INTO A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY, FORGETTING THAT EVOLUTION IS STILL AT WORK.
EXTINCTION IS ONE OF THE KEY TOOLS IN MOTHER NATURE’S TOOL KIT FOR EVOLUTION.
