Selling the need for space development and settlement

In the transcript there is some discussion on what will inspire action on space development and settlement.

I suggest that fronting up to the carbon problem could be the key to selling the need for serious action on space.

The problem as I understand it is that to keep our planet’s temperature rise below 1.5C, atmospheric CO2 must be below 350 parts per million (ppm).

This is the finding of the grandfather of climate science, James Hansen, spelt out in his 2009 book ~ Storms of My Grandchildren.

The nations had been running with the need to keep the global temperature below 2C, but in the Paris climate change conference last December, which Hansen attended for the first time, the nations accepted Hansen’s finding on 1.5C, but did not commit to the level of action that would deliver that.

The world is in two minds and wishful thinking will not solve the carbon problem.

The trouble is, no nation knows how to solve the carbon problem.

Atmospheric CO2 has now passed 400 ppm and our planet’s temperature rise is now passing 1C.

Atmospheric CO2 at 400 ppm and rising is going to deliver a temperature rise beyond 2C, which the nations have accepted will be heading into the danger zone.

As atmospheric CO2 rises, the planet heats up further, which kicks back into heating up faster places like the Arctic, where greenhouse gases are being released now from melting permafrost and dissolving ocean floor methane hydrates.

The oceans are also being warmed and the seas are becoming more acidic, as CO2 is absorbed from the air, which is becoming a survival problem for many marine species.

CO2 can be extracted from the air and the carbon cracked out of CO2, but this basic chemistry requires a huge amount of energy.

The volume of carbon in the air that must be dealt with is multiple gigatons.

Scientists can tell us how many gigatons with every ppm CO2 rise, so the problem is known quite intimately.

Faced with a problem created by human activity and now by Nature on a warming planet, where can we get the level of energy needed to directly extract excess carbon from the air, as quickly as possible, to get atmospheric CO2 back below 350 ppm?

We could build solar power stations in space to access the virtually unlimited energy well our our star.

I find it helpful to keep in mind that our Sun is now 35% hotter than at its birth 4.5 billion years ago and will continue to warm over the next 5 billion years, until expanding to the orbit of the Earth as a red giant star.

This is the basic astronomy of any star like our Sun.

So much fuel in reserve.

So much energy available for our needs.

The closer a solar power station is located to the Sun, the more power is generated.

It is easier to send an object in toward the Sun, than out again.

Solar power stations closer to the Sun would be able to beam energy to the outer Solar System.

Life only has around a billion years to run on Earth, before the planet gets too hot under a warming star.

Hansan fears that we are setting the stage to bring on the end of life on Earth a billion years too soon, by causing a runaway greenhouse effect.

In his 2009 book ~ The Disappearing Face Of Gaia ~ James lovelock warns that, because our star is getting warmer, our disruption of the Earth’s life support systems will lead to rapid change to a permanently hotter environment.

Lovelock sees the need for WWII level action and wonders why it isn’t happening.

With the basic information that a problem on Earth can be solved in space, there should be a resounding argument for immediate emergency level space development.

Building solar power stations in space will launch industry beyond Earth and open the way to construct orbital space settlements.

At this level of action, arks can be built in space, which would be a safety net for life, should environmental conditions deteriorate rapidly on Earth.

With industry in space, we would also be able to build home planet defences against asteroids and comets.

Sadly, we have pursued space on the cheap for decades and there is so much space junk above Earth, that a space junk cascade could result, destroying all satellites and locking space against anything leaving Earth for hundreds of Years.

This problem has inspired the Australian Government to invest $150 million to manage and seek to solve ~

Knowing there is a percentage chance that we are in a race against a space junk cascade clock, we need a plan that will deliver a permanent presence beyond the space junk zone as soon as possible.

This may be achieved with a mini robot space program, which would build a sustainable industrial level at a small scale in space, which being sustainable, could then be used to build anything larger.

The mini robot base can be managed from Earth via remote control systems, automation and AI.

Lacking any kind of permanent presence beyond Earth, should a space junk cascade hit, we would be trapped on Earth without hope.

The falling stars would be bright at night and some people would be killed by space junk.

As Galileo discovered, established world views are not open to demonstrable evidence. 

Similarly, we cannot expect vested interests in fossil carbon energy to look kindly on an unlimited energy well that will take away their power and money.

Our carbon problem now is a direct result of burning too much fossil fuel for too long, instead of using fossil fuel to make an energy transition to the power of the Sun.

O’Neill saw the benefit of the transition, but the fossil fuel lobby won the energy debate.

"If this development comes to pass, we will find ourselves here on Earth with a clean energy source, and we will further improve our environment by saving, each year, over a billion tons of fossil fuels,”

Another body of opposition is the conservation movement, which is focused on the Earth and has no wish to look at space solutions to Earth problems.

I have written to many academics who have written on the carbon problem and am either ignored, or the response received can be quite angry.

The Green lobby is powerful and is like a religion and expects all to follow their way on Earth alone.

In this mix, the Green position is in virtual lock-step with carbon energy interests.

A Boston professor wrote to me once, “My feet are firmly on the Earth.”

Its like a flat-Earth movement that refuses to see or wish to explore what a future would be like for humankind in the Solar System as a whole.

Worse, active opposition to space options can be expected.

See the comments below from Rosalie Woodruff, a serving Green member in the Tasmanian Parliament.

I had asked Rosalie if she had a plan to deal with the carbon problem, as described above.

I was not told about a plan.

They will fight for their view, but will not explore any alternative option, or consider evidence that differs from their views.

Such is dogma.

Many people simply have no idea and struggle day to day from crisis to crisis.

It would be good if a bunch of scientists could be brought together to crunch the figures on dealing with excess carbon in the air and how solar power stations in space could be employed to solve the problem.

Earth-based energy options could also be employed, but would not be enough to solve the problem.

With a body of evidence as strong as a sledge hammer, the space option could be promoted, with the aim of winning a critical level of support for a space future that wins back a safe Earth.

I suggest that a critical number of keen people would need to be ten million, but if fewer, fine.

If more will be needed, then more work will be needed to sell the vision with evidence.

Ten million keen people could connect globally by Email, the Internet and the virtual worlds, to plan local action toward building celestial futures.

Ten million keen people could change the dynamic on Earth, by demanding action and driving investment.

Ten million keen people could build a space future and save the Earth.

The space movement is therefore the ultimate Green movement, which can also build a future that delivers a healthy and creative life for all Earth’s children.

Aiming for that will be the way to peace on Earth and in space.

For ten million keen people, that work begins now on Earth, laying the foundations of a stellar economy and civilisation among the stars.

A movement of ten million keen people can begin with ten empowered individuals, who set an example by leading the way.

That is the difference between politics and nation building.

The aim is to build a new nation beyond Earth, which will be the light of human civilisation.

Success will create a much more advanced civilisation, than the one we will get clinging to the Earthly nest.

When the space option is fully explored, every problem on Earth can be solved.

Junk in the oceans, for instance, can be cleaned up by robots built in space factories.

There is not enough energy or money available on Earth to build the number of robots that would be needed to clean up the oceans.

Only with a stellar economy in space, can we deal with all problems on Earth.

Demonstrating such solutions for Earth will sell the need for space development.

Running with space solutions is also a lot more exciting than planting trees that die in a world getting hotter.

Tasmania just had its hottest summer on record, with bushfires and warmer ocean water moving south along the east coast, also further warming the island.

The article linked below may be of interest, exploring the Anthropocene.

There is no mention of a space option or future in this article.

This tells me the space community has totally failed to sell space at a level that counts.

In the future, when I read an article like this and it includes a space option, I will know the space community has woken up to the need to sell space.

In the meantime the Earth lobbies, both conservation and carbon energy, have got the whole world firmly locked down on Earth.

Do we hear nothing from ET, a silence from the stars, because their own conservation and carbon energy lobbies kept their species locked down on their planets, until their own carbon apocalypse brought them down?

As Earth changes intensify and populations begin to move, as we are now seeking out of Syria and Africa, conflicts may happen that slide into nuclear madness.

The first targets in a global conflict will be satellites, which can bring on a space junk cascade, which will lock any nuclear war survivors on Earth.

If that is how ET bows out, that could be our own fate in waiting.

If we wish to invest in cosmic survival for the children of Earth, then we may need to be swift.

The alternative may be to become a contributor to the silence among the stars.

This essay is a realistic exploration of the world we are making on Earth, but leaves out the game changer of what our future would be like with a permanent presence beyond Earth. In space the main energy is from the Sun and our star is a virtually unlimited energy well. Therefore, matched with the planets, moons, asteroids, comets and trillions of objects in the Solar System, a stellar economy would be able to bring energy to dealing with problems on Earth. Excess atmospheric carbon can be extracted and processed into a useful resource for Earth and space industries. The wealth generated by a stellar economy could deliver a healthy and creative life for all Earth's children. By delivering on that which can be delivered, peace will be built on Earth and in space. If we will not imagine the best that can be gained by a stellar economy in the Solar System, then we may simply be trapped in the worst that the Anthropocene can deliver on Earth. Worse still, is the fact that we become cruel when seeking to survive on a planet that cannot provide the expected good life for all. In Australia this is seen in our treatment of refugees. In Europe a refugee nightmare is rising fast, with cruel ways expected to lock in, to protect the good life. Will philosophers begin exploring the potential of the stellar civilisation, or dutifully follow the migration of humankind into hell on Earth?

We'll have to agree to disagree about the Third Way. I strongly believe that humans need to be responsible for our own mess, and that we need to put all our resources - financial and mental - into sorting out our problems on Earth.

I think you've got lots to contribute to problem solving the here and now, and I don't think our problems are unsolveable if we all get into it.

I don’t doubt there’s a huge task. I’ve read Hansen extensively, and I agree with the science of 350ppm etc. I don’t know if we’ll be successful, but that’s what I’m working to achieve.
My point is that I don’t agree with putting energy into escaping the problems we’ve made by looking to jumping ship and heading into space. This is a dispersion of our energies that is guaranteed to operate against the aim of reducing the ppm!
